12:45 am - A new season

Hello all,

Catching up, just finished reading everyone's journal to find out how you are all doing (I only have a dozen friends on this thing) I hadn't logged into LJ since I last posted June 14 so I had a bit of reading to do. Fortunately, some of you are almost as bad as me at posting!!

Here's the end of first summer in the new place. I think mentally, I have remained in NJ for the first 6 months I have been here...with 4 trips to NJ and several weekends of friends visiting here...and not really making the effort to meet anyone here on the off-weekends. It was a great summer though, really awesome....and I am looking forward to the fall, and starting a new life in Massachusetts.

When I moved to NJ, NJYP was my outlet for meeting people from all walks of life/areas of the state. In Boston, it's going to be Meetup.com. I am really excited about it...and it will give me a chance to try out new hobbies...I am excited!

Tomorrow, I am going to a street festival in Worcester, the second largest city in New England, and obviously in MA, to Boston. I haven't been to Worcester since checking out college campuses in 1997, so it's almost brand-spanking-new territory.

12:21 am - I'm baaaacckkk

Hello everyone. I am back from my almost one-year hiatus. Now in a new state, new job, new beginnings. I am excited about that. Just as I did when I first moved to NJ, I hope to use this to document my explorations while in Massachusetts!!

11:08 pm - Philly Love

Last Saturday, I drove to Philly my first time (usually I take a train, or drive with someone else!) Parking is such a pain there-- I spent $10, but I love the city. I parked at 38th and Chestnut, and walked to 30th in less than 10 minutes where I took a tour of the radio station WXPN that I am a member of. I saw the volunteer coordinator there who I met this past summer when I volunteered to help out at the annual summer music festival. It was so cool to see where all my favorite DJs work when not in the studio, and all the names I hear on the radio, and where they have guests do performances, and of course, the studios! Such a cool radio station. I am so proud to be a member, and I wish I could become more actively involved, but it's an hour away!

Today, I decided to take a trip to the Philly suburbs-- I visited Bryn Mawr and Swarthmore campuses. Both campuses and surrounding areas were very beautiful, and I would move to them in a second.

Bryn Mawr is right near other universities-- Villanova, Haverford and I am sure a bunch others, and so there were tons of students everywhere-- and tons of really cool places along the main street ...restaurants, cafes, shops. There is a Gullifty's there!! I couldn't believe it! It's a really liberal, hippyish area. I went into this store that made me feel like I was 19 again, when I was going through my hippy stage. I bought incense sticks, something my roommate just recently got me back into. Extremely strange observation I made was that many women weren't wearing bras-- not only in this shop, but I noticed a lot of women on the street. I mean, how could you not notice? I don't know what's up with that, but I prefer to keep mine close to my heart, where they belong.

Swarthmore felt much more residential and family oriented. All the streets were named after universities...Harvard Avenue, Dartmouth Road, etc. And they were all lined with gorgeous houses!!!! And the Swarthmore campus --300 acres-- is one large arboretum. It's going to be just beautiful there in a few weeks with everything in bloom. There was a different trend that I noticed here in clothing ...a bunch of white preppy guys were standing around together wearing khaki shorts, with blue oxford shirts and ties. I don't know where this club of fellas came from, maybe Princeton? I totally didn't expect liberal-artsy Swarthmore to have this kind of crew. I was hoping to see some tree-hugging guys with big hairy beards and birkenstocks. Maybe they were from Gettysburg college since I think there was some kind of sports game going on.

I think what was really cool about this trip was seeing hills in the distance, and driving/walking on them!! Where I live east of Princeton is extremely flat! I miss a little hill action once in a while :)

08:49 pm - TVs and Men

I am looking for a roommate. I have had 6 girls come look at the place so far in the last two weeks. Not one said a peep about the new 32 inch HDTV my family gave me for Christmas. But yesterday, the first guy to check out the place immediately noticed it :) I think I'm going to have another guy look at the place soon...I wonder if he'll say anything!? Maybe I should keep doing this and publish my observations on men and reactions to TVs.

Speaking of the TV (and manly topics), I am having a Superbowl party on Sunday...if anyone wants to drive 1, 6 or 12 hours, or in some cases take a 6 hour flight to come see my new tv (or me, or both), you are certainly welcome.

11:04 pm - Breaking out the tape deck

I was feeling a little nostalgic yesterday, after having a conversation about Milli Vanilli at work last week and a conversation about 90's hair on Saturday. So I was about to listen to my Cyndi Lauper's greatest hits CD, when I thought to myself...why don't I just go REALLY Old skool. I took the tape collection off the shelve in my closet and cracked open Cyndi Lauper's She's So Unusual..a gift from Santa when I was in first grade!!! 1986.

I don't remember the last time I used the tape player function on my boom box. I forgot how painful it was to play a tape. I put it in, freaked out for a second that it was broken from lack of use, and then realized that you need to REWIND first before you can play. And then after the 4th song, the tape stops. And then you have to flip it over for the other side! I wanted to listen to a song again, and said screw it, I would have to rewind again. Too much darn work to listen to music. I did listen to the Cyndi Lauper cd afterwards, for a nice comparison...and oh, the sound quality is SO much better.

Here's to progress....

11:09 pm - meeting my GGG Grandbig

It's a freakily small world, folks. I read something on the NJYP board about someone having people over their house to watch the NJ Devils, and I replied back that I was interested in joining (I miss my games at the Igloo with Balaji and my cousin ! You hear that Balaji? Thanks for introducing me!! I still remember my first game with you and Matt Brun when the glass broke!)

So I went to this house on Saturday night up in Metuchen, a half hour away....didn't know any of the 5 people there. I mention how cheap the hockey tickets were for the Penguins, and David asks me if I went to school in Pittsburgh, and where...and it turns out he went to CMU! Isn't that cool?? A CMU alum!! He graduated in 1996, so before I started there.

And then later on, I ask him if he was in any fraternities, and he says APhiO!! Holy moly. This is just getting freakier.
So I check the shrub that night, and he is indeed my big way up the line....but isn't everyone related on the shrub? It's a very incestuous plant we've got in our chapter.

12:02 am - Continuing with holiday cheer

On my Countdown to Christmas card, December 2nd says to watch a christmas video, December 3rd says to choose one toy to give to charity, and December 4th says to send a card to a friend.

While I didn't yet choose a toy to give to charity (okay I just did-- my unopened sidewalk chalk...don't see myself needing that anytime soon), I did watch a Charlie Brown's Christmas on Tuesday and the Polar Express movie on Friday. I couldn't help but think of Tom Hanks when the train conductor punched my ticket on my train ride from New Brunswick today. If you would like a Christmas card, I will need your address which you can email to my userid directly at yahoo.

I can't take pictures of my tree since I live in the stone age without a digital camera. I'm going to see if I can borrow one of my friends. I am going to have to get one soon though, because I am planning to go to Germany next year, and shame on me if I can't take any pictures. Anyone want to travel with me? Let me know!!!!
